River View Farm
Cattle Drive in West Virginia
When someone says cattle drive you usually think about Texas, Colorado, Wyoming or one of the other western states, not West Virginia. On the Riverview Farm in the Potomac River Valley along River Road near Romney West Virginia a round up of the cattle and the driving the cattle happen every year. All the cattle are herded together into one pen from the different fields and then separated by the owner into the herds he wants and driven back into the appropriate fields with the bull he chooses for each herd. It is quite an undertaking with family, neighbors, friends, and people who just love to ride horses helping.
Friends and neighbors getting horses ready for the cattle drive.
Whole families come
Mounted up and ready to ride
One horse has different idea.
Rider brings horse quickly under control
Some of the group heading for the pastures. Not everyone rides horses.
First you have find where the cattle are in the fields.
After finding the cattle they started rounding them up and driving them toward river crossing.
Driving the cattle toward the stream crossing
Some cattle were easy to get rounded up and pointed right direction
Others were not so cooperative
Driving small calf in tall grass
Stand off between cow and horse with rider.. Finally cow turns and heads toward river crossing
After cattle start across river the riders go back over the river.
After all the cattle are rounded up from the different fields, all the cattle are put in one pen and the selecting and separating starts. The owner separates the cattle into different herds to put in different fields then puts the bull in that field to get the healthiest cattle.
The cattle are separated
After separated the different herds are driven back across the river the their respective fields.
Taking the cattle back across the river
Once the cattle back in the fields the riders cross back over the stream for the last time. They have made three trips across the stream.
Starting back over the stream for the last time.
Not everyone rides horses........
Four wheelers crossing the stream caused a stir.
One more thing to do before work is done for the day. Get the bull into the field.
The bull is on the side of River Road from the fields.
Good days work....
Everyone gets together after the work is done to eat , drink and talk .
The following images are my photo impressions of the cattle drive. I call it Pixel Paintography as I use Photoshop and other digital applications to create these images . From spicing together a panoramic , composite different photos, to adding a paint brush effect to get the desired end image that I want.
